Airtel, Vodafone Idea and other telecom operators may have to pay the government a whopping Rs 1.42 lakh crore in three months.

With total liabilities estimated at Rs 1.4 lakh crore, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea, through the telecom sector association COAI, are seeking waiver of at least the penalty and interest on delayed payments, which constitute about half of the total dues, if a complete waiver of past liabilities is not possible.

Shares of Vodafone Idea slumped 8.66 per cent to Rs 3.48 apiece - its 52-week low - on the BSE.

While older TSPs such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone-Idea have been talking of financial stress ever since they faced intense competition from free voice and dirt-cheap data from newcomer Reliance Jio, the matter has assumed greater importance after the October 24 judgment of the Supreme Court.

Indian government has created a panel to work out a financial bailout package that may include lowering of spectrum charges.

Led by the sharp fall in its shares, Vodafone Idea witnessed an erosion of Rs 3,792.58 crore from its market valuation which is now at Rs 12,442.42 crore.

Vodafone Idea plummeted 23.36 pc to close at Rs 4.33 on the BSE. In intra-day, it tanked 27.43 pc to Rs 4.10 -- its 52-week low.

As a market regulator, it would give us insights into what we need to be watchful of, and what we need to do. This, would also enable the Commission to craft a competition advocacy strategy and recommendations tailored to the needs of the telecom sector, said CCI Chairman Ashok Kumar Gupta.
