A new study reveals the negative effects of traffic noise on frogs and how some frogs have adapted. Traffic noise is stressful to frogs and impairs the production of skin peptides that defend against pathogens like chytrid fungus. Frogs from ponds near noisy highways show a dampened stress response and altered immune profile when exposed to noise compared to frogs from quiet ponds, suggesting they have adapted to reduce the negative effects of traffic noise.

Estadio Nacional disaster (or Lima football disaster) is the worst disaster in football history. On May 24, 1964, Peru hosted Argentina in a qualifying round match for the Tokyo Olympics’s football tournament at the Estadio Nacional in Lima. The stadium was packed with capacity 53,000 crowd. Argentina was leading 1-0 till the sixth minutes of normal time remaining when Uruguayan referee Angel Eduardo Paros disallowed an equiliser by Peru. This infuriated the home fans and triggered a pitch invasion. The police fired tear gas shells to avoid which led to a stampede. Officially 328 died.

How long a beheaded cockroach can survive? Scientists say a week or may be more. As it has an open circulatory system and unlike humans, who breath through nose and mouth, it breaths through little holes in the body and is not much depe?ndent on the head. But a headless cockroach dies of thirst because it can’t drink water. Then again, cockroaches are poikilotherms (cold-blooded insects) they need much less food than humans do. Cockro?ac?hes can survive at least 2 weeks without food. Though cockroach?es have two brains, one in head and other in butt, they don’t co?n?trol breathing or oxygen circulation. The spiracles pipe send air directly to tissues through a set of tubes called tracheae.

Many love to write off Hindi films as waste of time. For them, only the movies produced in the far-flung US or ‘exotic’ countries are worth watching. Just read this to disagree with them and substantiate your argument. Zoya Akhtar directed film, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, was based on friendship and what one actually wants from life. Shot mostly in Spain, the film also included the Tomatino Festival. Those who saw the movie dream to have at least one vacation there. It has contributed hugely to the Spanish tourism, raising the visitors’ number by 65%. The movie has become part of college programme there. Students of marketing management have it in their syllabus as a case study.

A kiss is the touch or pressing of one’s lips against another person or an object. Cultural connotations of kissing vary widely and so do the duration. So, how long could be the longest kiss? Hold your breath before making a guess. Ekkachai Tiranarat and Laksana Tiranarat of Thailand hold the record for the longest kiss and it’s 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds long. The couple achieved the fete at a Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Pattaya event, in Pattaya on February 12-14, 2013. And it was not an easy contest with nine couples, including one in 70s in the final round. But Ekkachai and Laksana defended their record in style, winning a cash prize and two diamond rings as well as the Guinness World Records title.

Piplantri. Does it convey anythi?ng to you? If no then let me tell you it’s a village in the Rajsa?m?and district of Rajasthan. Till few years back birth of a girl child was considered inauspicious in this village. Female foeticide and infanticide were common. But it’s not the same any more. Now, birth of a daughter is celebrated by planting of 111 trees. These trees, planted by hre parents and relatives, are looked after by the village panchayat. The turnaround was made possible by social campaigner and former Piplantri sarpanch Shyam Sundar Paliwal. He advocated if the trees planted were nurtured for 18 years, it would yield enough money by the time the girl reaches the age of marriage and take care of her dowry.

The human genome (the genetic code in each human cell) has 23 DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecules (called chromosomes) and each DNA contains 500,000- 2.5 million nucleotide pairs. An uncoiled DNA molecule is 1.7-8.5 cm long – the average could be around 5 cm. A human body contains around 37 trillion of such cells and if we uncoil all DNA encased in each cell and place them end to end, it would measure around 200,000,000 km, which is enough for 17 sun-to-Pluto roundtrips. The distance between sun and Pluto and back is 120,000,000,000 km. Interestingly, we share 99 per cent of our DNA with every other human being, which means we are far more similar than otherwise.

Have you heard about the Tooth Fairy? From being a fantasy figure of early childhood in Western and Western-influenced cultures, Tooth Fairy reached out to other cultures as well. But that’s nothing special. What’s interesting is the impact of inflation on her gift to children. Though the reward varies by country, the family’s economic status and many other factors including the peer pressure, in 1950, the average gift from the Tooth Fairy was just 25 cents. But by 2013, according to a Visa study, it increased to $3.70, which is a jump of almost 15 times. According to the folklore, when children lose a baby teeth, they should place it underneath their pillow for the Tooth Fairy to replace it with a small payment.

Songs are integral part of Hindi films or movies produced in Mumbai. But some songs, especially item numbers, cost huge money, so much so that the amount could easily finance a regional film. ‘Party all night’ is such a song from Akshay Kumar-starrer Boss. It cost producers Rs 6 crore (approx). This big hit dance number, sang by famous rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh, saw Sonakshi Sinha shaking a leg with Akshay Kumar in the film. Over 600 foreign models were hired as background dancers for the song choreographed by Sumit Dutt (of Character Dheela fame) and Raju Khan. Till date, this song is said to be the most expensive song shot in Bollywood.

Biggest ocean of our solar system is on Jupiter –not of water but metallic hydrogen. Jupiter retained a higher level of hydrogen and helium than earth when it was formed because of its distance from the sun. Its orbit is five times further from the sun compared with the earth. Because of its chemical composition and mass, way down the cold clouds pressure rises to the point that hydrogen turns into liquid and forms an ocean of liquid hydrogen. Computer models show not this is the largest ‘known’ ocean in the solar system, but could also be about 40,000 km deep – roughly as deep as the earth is around!
