San Diego-based Qualcomm said in a statement that it is interested in the 2.3 GHz band, that will facilitate the deployment of TD-LTE, a broadband wireless technology similar to Wimax but following a different standard.
The BWA spectrum is necessary for rolling out Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (Wimax) services and helps hand-held devices and laptops access the Internet.
The auction for 3G spectrum is slated to start on April 9, and for the BWA spectrum from April 11.
The government will auction two slots of radio bandwidth for BWA services. The base price for one pan-India slot for WiMAX service has been fixed at Rs 1,750 crore.
However, Qualcomm will be using it for deploying TD-LTE, which is compatible with 3G.
Qualcomm and its partners intend to create a TD-LTE infrastructure and device in concert with 3G networks and devices to support India's broadband goals.
