Dolby looks to expand in DTH, mobile handset

Global entertainment technology firm Dolby Laboratories, better known in India for its sound systems in cinema halls, today said it will tap the growing satellite television and mobile handset markets here to drive its future growth in the country.

The US-based audio technology firm, which has an annual turnover of over USD 720 million, said India and China are the fastest growing markets for the company and expects significant contribution coming from these countries.

"We are very focused on the direct-to-home television services. This is where we anticipate our future growth coming from. We are working with some of the biggest operators and looking forward to tap the market," Dolby Laboratories Senior Director (Marketing Broadcast) Jason Power told PTI.

At present, the company's biggest source of revenue has been from the media and entertainment industry. It, however, did not reveal the turnover and how much the Indian market contributes to its global turnover.

In India, the firm has been associated with major multiplex chains like PVR Cinema providing surround sound technologies.

He said the Indian satellite television market is in an "explosion" and is expected to reach a total of 15 million subscribers by 2014. At present, Dolby has tied up with leading direct-to-home (DTH) players such as Sun Direct DTH, Airtel Digital and Tata Sky to provide audio technology in the set of boxes.

As part of its effort to tap the DTH space, the firm has created Dolby Digital Plus, an enhanced version of the Dolby Digital system, which allows broadcast operators to deliver high quality surround sound along with the set-of-boxes.

"Digitisation is happening rapidly in the Indian broadcasting industry. The transition in terms of sound is taking place quickly. Besides, the real drive in High Definition will also push our growth in India," Power said.

The firm is also betting big on the growing mobile handset market in the country and is looking at expanding presence in the space.

"Another area on which we are focused is the handset market. We are looking at tying up with mobile phone firms to provide enhanced sound technology in handsets," Power said.

At present, the company has a tie-up with Nokia and provides audio technology in some of its models. Besides, Dolby also has association with brands such as Acer, Lenovo, LG, HCL and Samsung.
