Inflation leaves consumers teary-eyed as pricey onions, food items bite

For most part of 2019, the government was successful in price control but the party seemed to have lost the sheen lately.

In the fourth bi-monthly monetary policy announced in October, RBI had projected at 3.5-3.7 per cent for H2 of FY20 and 3.6 per cent for the first quarter of FY21.

In October, inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) spiked to a 16-month high of 4.62 per cent on costlier food items.

The fall was mainly due to subdued prices of non-food articles and fall in prices of manufactured items.

The price rise in the food basket was recorded at 5.11 per cent in September, as against 2.99 per cent in the preceding month.

Headline consumer price index inflation likely jumped in September on the back of a surge in onion prices. But that will hardly bring tears to the eyes of the RBI, as it is likely to have stayed below the 4.0 per cent target, said Shilan Shah, senior India economist at Capital Economics.

If the consensus is right, inflation will come in below the RBI’s medium-term target for 14 months in a row.

However, retail inflation is still within the Reserve Bank's target range, thus keeping hopes of another rate cut alive.

Core inflation, which excludes food and energy prices, also likely got a boost last month from a surge in gold prices.

The expected rise in inflation comes despite the price of oil, India’s biggest import, falling by more than 7 per cent.
