The Sensex was trading 258.60 points, or 0.68 per cent, higher at 38,365.47.
Likewise, the 50-share NSE Nifty closed down by 46.80 points or 0.41 per cent at 11,313.10.
The stock of India's largest private sector airline declined 2.22 per cent at Rs 1829.35, on the BSE.
The 30-share index tanked 151.70 points or 0.40 per cent to trade at 38,153.71.
Other major laggards were IndusInd Bank, SBI, Bharti Airtel, ONGC, Tata Steel and RIL -- falling as much as 6.30 pc.
Compared with the Sensex movement, broader smallcap, midcap and largecap indices underperformed.
The broader Nifty was up 69.30 points or 0.60 per cent at 11,543.75 in opening trade.
On the Sensex chart, Yes Bank was the biggest loser with over 15 per cent drop.
Yes Bank, IndusInd Bank, Tata Steel, Sun Pharma, Vedanta and Tata Motors were among the top losers on the Sensex chart.
Markets would remain closed on Wednesday for 'Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti'.
