Indian ADRs gain merely $986m last week

Indian stocks trading on American bourses added only USD 986 million to their collective market capitalisation in the past week as seven of them saw their valuation declining.

For the week ended March 12, Indian entities listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq added net of USD 986 million to their market capitalisation.

The total gain was offset by the loss made by a handful of companies, including IT bellwether Infosys Technologies, auto maker Tata Motors and IT firm Mahindra Satyam.

Out of the 16 companies trading as American Depository Receipts (ADRs), seven entities together lost USD 791 million from their market capitalisation.

ADRs are bought and sold on American bourses just like stocks and are issued by banks or brokerage firms.

Private sector lender HDFC Bank, which led the gainers among the Indian stocks, saw its market capitalisation rise by USD 631 million to USD 19.92 billion last week.

HDFC Bank is followed by IT icon Wipro, whose valuation jumped up by USD 514 million to USD 33.71 billion.

Meanwhile, Mahindra Satyam has emerged the biggest loser witnessing a value erosion of USD 283 million from its valuation to USD 3.5 billion.

Infosys, second on the losing list, shed USD 251 million from its total market capitalisation to USD 33.74 billion.
