Putting nature into work
Apr 07 2010
While real estate developers long started using the bionic structure concept to make buildings appear appealing and borrowed the best structures from nature, companies making interiors have just started innovating on that front. Bangalore-based V3 Engineers, a leading manufacturer of modular furniture, has introduced a range of eco-friendly doors under the brand name V3 Dorz, which has honeycomb structures in doors. This comb is made of re-cycled paper. The design concept of these doors is based on a European technology brought to India by V3.
The solid frames bind the honey-cell fillers inside the door while a skin covers the door structure from the outside, making the honey comb doors appear no different than conventional doors. Also, what the honeycomb doors do is make the whole concept of heavy doors appear a myth. The usage of recycled paper means that the doors are at least 50 per cent lighter than conventional doors made of heavy wood. The inherent weight advantage also adds longevity to the hardware. The in-built feature also allows for accommodating gaps (up to 10 mm) between frame and wall.
While the weight is unusual, the doors come in standard sizes with fully assembled frame. Explains Guru Prasad of V3 Engineers: "They come in standard sizes, with fully assembled frame and doors ready for installation to the wall. The basic frame of the door is made out of MDF/seasoned timber processed in CNC machine. The frames are assembled in standard jigs for accuracy and seasoned and pre-cut honey-cell structure is used as filler. This honey-comb structure used as filler is made of recycled paper." The doors also have a pre-determined provision made for locks, hinges and handles.
The honeycomb structure is dimensionally stable under differing weather conditions such as moisture, dry or cold. Doors from V3 Dorz are available in three standard thicknesses – 30mm, 33mm and 37 mm, the size can also be custom manufactured on request, added Guru Prasad.
