TVS Motor launches crusade against copy cats

TVS Motor Company, manufacturer of two-wheelers and three-wheelers, has kicked off a countrywide copy cat hunt to protect the brand and customers from the ill effects of spurious market. India’s auto components market is pegged at $30 billion and spurious components  (fake/ copy right infringed parts) account for 30 to 40 per cent of it.

K Venkateshwaralu, vice president-parts business at TVS Motor Company said here on Wednesday that only some 30 per cent of TVS vehicles are serviced at authorised service centres while a huge 70 per cent of TVS vehicles are serviced by external service centres, therefore chances of spurious parts getting into the vehicles are high.

This 30:70 ratio is true for automotive industry in general and therefore all players are fighting the issue of counterfeiting, he said.

TVS is currently in the process of conducting countrywide raids with the help of the police. Some 55 such raids are already conducted and the police have seized spurious parts worth Rs 50 lakh of which Bangalore alone accounts for Rs 20 lakh, collected through six raids.

TVS has also formed a mechanics network, Subhiksha, involving 10,000 mechanics across the country who would potentially play a crucial role in identifying spurious parts, by offering links and leads, and alerting vehicle owners. To copy cats at bay, all TVS spare parts come with a unique QR codes and post purchase customers get an SMS.

Speaking to the media here on Wednesday Venkateshwaralu said, ``Some 15 lakh vehicles come to our service centres every month. We noticed a trend of certain parts easily breaking down or wearing off, leading to accidents. This has also been affecting the credibility of our brand.

We see this tendency mostly in rural markets. Our target is to minimise this menace, ensure customer safety and also to protect our brand.’’

TVS has 1000 authorised spare parts outlets and 4000 authorised service centres in the country.
