TVS Motor India’s electric two-wheeler unit has halted regular production of Scooty Teenz owing to low demand and battery related issues, which the management claims to resolve at the earliest.

The electric two-wheeler market however is estimated to sell about 1.4 lakh electric two-wheeler during 2010-11 as against 80,000 last fiscal, said director, Society of Indian Electric Vehicle Manufacturers, and CEO, Hero Electric, Sohinder Gill. He said other electric two-wheeler companies were doing well and new models were expected to come in the market by end this year.

TVS Motor, which sold 9,682 units of its electric scooters during April-March 2008-09, sold only 519 units during April-March 2009-10. The company now manufacturers electrical scooter only on booking basis. Asked to confirm the suspension move, president marketing, TVS Motor, H S Goindi said, “Electric scooters business is not doing that well so we produce on order basis. We are not focusing much on that, but it does not mean that we have stopped production totally. We are concentrating on motorcycles and mopeds at present.”
