Car maker Toyota Kirloskar Motor today crossed the 1 million sales mark in the country.

The company recorded its 1 millionth vehicle sale through Nippon Toyota, its authorised dealer in Cochin, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said in a statement. The car, a Toyota Etios, was handed over to a customer during a ceremony.

"The sale of Toyota's 1 millionth car in India marks a very important milestone for us. Since its inception, Toyota has been present in the MPV/SUV segment in India and we have been market leaders ever since in these segments," TKM Senior Vice President N Raja said.

The company forayed into the mass segment with the Etios and Liva in 2011 and has been able to cross this milestone in a short duration, he added.

Established in India in 1997, Toyota currently has a production capacity of up to 3,10,000 units.
