“Tata Sumo Gold, the most powerful SUV in its category will redefine the market with its sheer power and reliability,” said R Ramakrishnan, vice-president, commercial, passenger car business unit, Tata Motors.
Powered by a 3.0-litre BS-III and BS-IV compliant diesel CR4 engine that churns out 85bhp of power, the new Tata Sumo Gold will take on the popular Mahindra Bolero and the upcoming Chevrolet Tavera BS4.
“With 14.7 kmpl mileage, the Tata Sumo Gold is conceived and designed for the young customer looking for a stylish, new-age vehicle that is powerful and can take on any terrain with ease. It will change the face of entry level SUVs in India,” said Ramakrishnan.
The new vehicle is being launched in four variants such as GX, EX, LX and CX with a price tag of Rs 5.23 lakh and Rs 6.74 lakh for the top of line at showrooms in Pune. Tata Motors officials said at present its three brands: Tata Victa, Spacio and Grande sold on an average 1,700-1,800 units every month.
Ramakrishnan said last year the company sold a total of 18,000 Sumo units and this year till October it had clocked a sale of 10,000 units. “We have a 15 per cent market share in this segment and we are targeting to increase it considerably with Tata Sumo Gold,” he said.
Ramakrishnan said Tata Motors sales were better than the industry due to hike in fuel price and interest rate. “While the industry de-grew in the last two months, Tata Motors’ passenger and utility vehicles grew by 7 per cent in September and it was flat in October,” he said.
Tata Motors has an installed capacity to produce 3.5 lakh vehicles at its sprawling manufacturing facility in Pune, where the new vehicle will be produced.
