Sony awaits festival boost, aims for Rs 2,000 cr sales

Firm expects 30% jump in overall turnover, raises promotions
Speaking about the company’s projections, Sunil Nayyar, senior general manager, sales, Sony India said, that festive period is extremely important for the firm and this year riding on its innovative technology and the new product line-up, retail network expansion and heavy marketing investment, the company is positive about consolidating its strong position in India.
“For the festive period alone, we expect to generate a 30-35 per cent jump in sales over the same period last year. We are promoting Bravia very strongly and investing heavily on advertisements. Also we have introduced innovative consumer promotion offers across categories including Bravia, Cyber-shot, handycam and home theatre system,” Nayyar added. The company is spending about Rs 100 crore on its advertisement and promotional activities during the festive season alone.
Giving details about the company’s expected sales during the festive season, Nayyar said, “We plan to sell about 400,000 units of Bravia during these 75 days, which is a 40 per cent growth over last year, while the expected sale of Cybershot cameras is also similar to that of the former.”
According to Nayyar, the festive season contributes about 30 per cent to the company’s overall turnover. Sony India had clocked revenue of Rs 5,500 crore for the financial year ended March 2011.
Further, providing a sense of the company’s overall sales target for the financial year, Nayyar said that for the year ending March 2012, Sony hopes to sell 12 lakh units of Bravia television. “The LCD/LED market in India is a 40 lakh unit segment and Bravia is one of our fastest moving product category,” he added. Sony will invest about Rs 150 crore for the promotion and advertisement of Bravia this year.
Also, the firm’s revenue from the sale of digital still cameras is expected to rise to Rs 900 crore this year from Rs 600 crore clocked last financial year, while it expects to sell about five lakh units of Vaio as against 2.5 lakh units last year.
