Samsung banks on LCD TV sales

Consumer durable major Samsung India expects to grow at 25-27 per cent to touch a turnover of $2 billion by December end. The company follows January-December as financial year.

The company said its focus on LCD television would continue, and hoped to notch up 20 per cent of its total volume from flat panel TVs.

Samsung also launched LED televisions, a upgraded version of LCD television, and has seen significant sales. It targets to double these sales in 2010.

“Samsung enjoys 40 per cent of the total LCD market and is expected to maintain the growth. With the launch LED television, the market has actually grown significantly. We expect to sell close to 55,000 to 60,000 LED television sets by end of this year. We intend to double our LED television sales in the next financial year,” said R Zutshi, deputy managing director, Samsung India.

According to a latest data by ORG-GFK, a part of AC Nielsen company, the market for LCD television in India is estimated at 1.3 to 1.4 million at present with companies such as LG, Panasonic and Sony being the leading players.

“The television market has grown by 30 per cent. Overall, the consumer durable industry has been growing this year. We too are expecting a growth

of 25 to 27 per cent this year over last year’s turnover of Rs 1.7 billion,” said Zutshi. According to

him, 30 per cent of Samsung’s sales comes from

television.

Meanwhile, Samsung clocked a sell of Rs 1,700 crore during this festival season. Forty per cent of its overall sales came from the festival season.

Samsung on Tuesday kick started a special promotion drive in the southern part of India under which anybody buying a 26 inch and above LCD television will get a free Sun set-top box. The promotion will continue till January 15, 2010.
