The domestic currency had closed 15 paise lower at 45.58/59 in the previous session on Monday. The market remained closed yesterday on account of 'gudi padwa'.
Dealers said the rupee strengthened against the US currency largely in tandem with other firming major currencies and dollar selling by banks and exporters.
Besides, fresh capital inflows by foreign funds into equities also supported the Indian rupee, they added.
Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex rose by 118.48 points, or 0.68 per cent to 17,501.66 in the opening trade today.
