The 44-year-old singer-composer who picked up two golden gramophones over the weekend, headed straight to the studio afterwards to record the song, which will help raise money for the victims of the Haiti earthquake, along with 80 other artistes .
"At the re-recording of 'We Are The World' to raise funds for the Haiti earthquake," tweeted Rahman.
Legendary producer Quincy Jones and singer Lionel Richie invited Rahman, who won two Oscar awards last year for the soundtrack of the hit movie 'Slumdog Millionaire', to participate in the new charity single, reported Los Angeles Times.
Proceeds of the song will go straight to the people of Haiti, who are recovering from the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake on January 12.
The star-studded group also included Akon, Usher, Jeff Bridges, Miley Cyrus, Will.I.Am, Natalie Cole, Toni Braxton, Nicole Scherzinger, Jason Mraz and Brian Wilson.
The charity single comes 25 years after the song was originally composed by Jackson and producer Quincy Jones to raise money for Live Aid.
Interestingly, the 'King of Pop' had expressed a desire to work with Rahman just two months before he died in June last year.
The 'Mozart of Madras' had revealed that the 'Thriller' hitmaker was keen on making music with him.
"I met him two months before he died and he expressed an interest in working with me," Rahman said earlier.
"Meeting him was everything and changed my life. He loved stuff I did and I loved stuff he did. He was such a nice person," he added.
Legendary producer Quincy Jones said that the song was the perfect way to raise awareness about the need to help those in pain.
"It's the 25th anniversary and it's perfect timing. It's not an accident, man. That's God. It will be We Are the World for Haiti," said Jones.
