NASA’s M3 confirms water presence on moon

The quantity found is much larger than what was expected

India’s own instrument Moon Impact Probe (MIP) on Chandrayaan has

detected water presence on the moon surface. This finding was

confirmed by NASA’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3).

ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair told reporters on Friday that the

country's maiden lunar mission has made a path- breaking and real

discovery by establishing the presence of water signatures on the

moon.

``Our team is analysing all the details. There could be much more

interesting facts. We will talk about all of it once we have concrete

data analysis report,’’ he said.

According to him, the MIP while descending from Chandrayaan-I to moon

picked up strong signals of water particles. ``But the signatures of

waters are not in the form of sea, lake or even as a puddle or not

even a drop. You cannot pick it up just like that. The signatures are

embedded on the surface in minerals and rocks," he added.

The quantity found is much larger than what was expected, he said.
