M&M plans draw of lots for XUV500

Mahindra & Mahindra on Friday said it had received more than 5,900 orders from customers within just two days of reopening bookings for its premium SUV, XUV500.

”If the bookings exceed 7,200 units, we will undertake a draw for allotment of the car,” Vivek Nayer, senior vice-president for marketing in the automotive division of Mahindra & Mahindra, said. ”Within two days of reopening bookings for XUV500, we received an overwhelming response,” he said, adding that the manufacturing facility at Chakan, near Pune, has the capacity to produce 3,000 units of XUV500 per month.

To ensure that customers do not have to wait beyond a reasonable period, the company is resorting to a draw. It will ensure fair and transparent allotment of vehicles to clients. The draw process will be carried out by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India.

The company said customers would have to pay Rs 80,000 for the XUV500 draw application form. Results of the draw will be announced by February 15, 2012. The 10 days of the second phase of booking, which opened on January 25, will end on February 3. New bookings for the XUV500 has been extended across 19 cities in India, including Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jallandhar, Patiala, Kochi, Trivandrum, Calicut, Trissur, Coimbatore, Nagpur and Nasik, the company said.

”The market’s response to XUV500 is on expected lines as it is a very good product in the category compared with its peers,” said Yaresh Kothari, senior research analyst at Angel Broking.

After launching the vehicle on September 29 last year, the company had suspended new bookings in October as four months’ production, or 8,000 units, was sold out within 10 days. The 2.2-litre diesel SUV available in three variants in seven shades is priced between Rs 11.10 lakh and Rs 12.50 lakh.
