Manesar plant as "unwarranted", while supporting the management's decision to sack 11 employees.

The state labour department, while admitting that the demand of workers to form new union was not illegal as law provided for it, said the matter is an "internal matter" of the company but the local authorities were keeping a tab on the whole issue.

"They (workers) can form the new union as law provides for the same...But the strike by employees, which has crippled the manufacturing facility, to press for new union is not a right step," Haryana Labour Commissioner Satwanti Ahlawat told PTI here today.

She also supported the sacking of 11 employees yesterday by the company for allegedly provoking other employees to go on strike and added the agitation was "unwarranted".

"The company is within its right to terminate any employee who is creating indiscipline in the factory premises," Ahlawat said.

She, however, added that the standoff between the management and the workers that had entered the fourth day today is an internal matter of the company.

"This issue is between workers and management and it is their internal matter...(however) the local administration is closely watching the situation," Ahlawat added.

The striking employees have been demanding the recognition of a new union Maruti Suzuki Employees Union, which will not be part of the existing Maruti Udyog Kamgar Union at Gurgaon facility.

Top officials of Maruti Suzuki had even met senior officials of Haryana Labour department yesterday and apprised them of the situation.
