In an initiative that reflects how microfinance companies are looking at tapping their existing network to broaden services under the inclusion basket, Chennai-based Equitas Microfinance (formaly known as formerly known as UPDB Micro Finance) has joined hands with HealthNet global to provide healthcare services to the poor at affordable cost.

The telemedicine solution, which will be provided by hospital giant Apollo’s physicians, will bet on real time telecommunications technology.

These patients, who will be charged Rs 50 for a consultation, will be located in remote areas as well as urban slums.

“Healthcare is a significant financial stress for the poor, who lack access to quality care. Providing quality healthcare at the doorstep will significantly reduce patient risks. While the services will be rolled out in Chennai initially, we will take it pan India in three or four months after the pilot project. We will have to see if clients are coming for regular visits,” said PN Vasudevan, managing director, Equitas.

The solutions, named Consult 4 Health and products were developed by CIRM. Under this, the patient data is collected by way of processes like family history, biometrics and integration of medical equipment.

This collected data is stored and shared with healthcare professionals to diagnose, treat and follow-up, the company said in a statement.

“With this initiative launched in partnership with Equitas, we will continue to reach out to the economically weaker sections of society at large and transform the way healthcare is delivered, using a combination of brick-and-mortar and online services,” said Charles Antony, chief executive officer, HealthNet Global.

Prior to this, Equitas used to conduct medical camps for the past three years. “This is a not-for profit initiative and would only help us to provide holistic products to the client,” Vasudevan said.
