Discussions on for restructuring package of discoms: Govt

Tags: News
The Power and Finance Ministries are in discussions for a financial restructuring package for power distribution companies to make them viable, government said today.

Replying to Supplementaries in Rajya Sabha, Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said tariff for retail sale of electricity by discoms is determined by State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs) as per the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2003.

He was reacting to questions by some Members over consumers receiving huge electricity bills.

In reply to a query, he said the Centre cannot interfere in the jurisdiction of states.

The Regulatory Commission while determining the tariff examines the expenditure of discoms before finalising their annual revenue requirement, he said.

Any person aggrieved by an order made by the appropriate commission under the Act can appeal to the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity, he said.

Going by estimates, the loss of discoms stood at around Rs 2.46 lakh crore in the last fiscal.
