Nano’s sales have been steadily increasing after hitting rock bottom at 509 units last November. Aggressive advertising and new offers have restored customer trust and boosted the sales of the world’s cheapest car since December last year, after a series of fires in at least half a dozen Nanos hurt consumer confidence.
The sales growth in its passenger vehicle segment, however, was just one per cent. The company sold 23,387 passenger vehicles in April 2011 against 23, 099 units sold in April 2010. In March 2011, the company had registered passenger vehicle sales of 27,678 units. Including buses, trucks and passenger vehicles, Tata Motors sold 64,383 units, showing a growth of 13 per cent in April. In April 2010, it had sold 57,199 vehicles.
“The Indica range sales were 4,250 units, lower by 53 per cent. The Indigo range recorded sales of 5,282 nos., lower by 27 per cent (over April last year),” the company said in a statement on Sunday. Though April is usually considered a seasonal lean month for car sales, its newly introduced Indica BSIV variant aggressively promoted as India’s most fuel-efficient car failed to arrest the decline in Indica sales. Indica sales had registered a decline of 14 per cent in 2010-11 at 87,845 units, compared to the year ago period. “Jaguar Land Rover sales continued their upward trend,” the company statement added.
India’s third largest two-wheeler maker TVS Motor Company sold 167,744 units in April 2011, showing a growth of 14 per cent. The performance was led by scooters, which grew 31 per cent to 35, 074 units in April against the year ago month. India Yamaha Motor continued its growth momentum recording 53 per cent gain in April at 25,817 units. “We hope to sustain growth for the rest of the year,” said Hiroyuki Suzuki, MD and CEO of India Yamaha Motor.
