“We had talks with Le Meridien group which has a few patches of land in the city. For the hospital project we will need five acres of land. It would be a multi-specialty hospital with an initial capacity of 100 beds, scalable to 300 beds. The investment on the project can be around Rs 150 crore,” said Prathap C Reddy, chairman, Apollo Hospitals.
Apollo will also have a training institute for nurses and para-medical staff along with the hospital. The healthcare major has been receiving proposals from several hospitals in Kerala whose second-generation management are no more interested in running the healthcare business. The company, however, has been keen to enter cities with over 10 lakh population.
Asked how Apollo viewed the market which has thousands of missionary-run hospitals, Reddy said: “When we started the first corporate hospital in India, the country only had government hospitals, those run by charity institutions and small private firms. So we won’t face much competition in the Kerala market.”
Further, the company is in the process of setting up 13 new hospitals and expanding capacity of four of its existing facilities. The new projects will add a total of 2,860 beds by FY15. The total cost on the ongoing projects is Rs 1,646 crore. This includes four Reach hospitals, three super specialty hospitals in Mumbai and one super specialty hospital in Patna.
The construction work on the company’s first medical college in Hyderabad is in completion stage, he said. The college has received the state and university approval and is waiting for the Medical Council of India’s nod. The college occupies 10-acre land within the Apollo Health City.
