The company mulls to take over India’s small screen market by storm with stream video content on television

Amazon India has launched its premium streaming device, the Amazon Fire TV Stick, at a price of Rs 3,999 along with with voice remote.

This comes three and a half months after introducing Prime Video and is a move by the logistics-major to take over India’s small screen market by storm.

With the India launch of the device, which lets its users stream video content directly on television, the company is seen standing tall against competitors like Google’s Chromecast.

The Fire TV stick erases the need of a laptop or a phone to play content on TV – just plug the stick into your TV’s HDMI port to unlock everything that Amazon Prime Video has.

On the one hand, the streaming media device gives its users access to TV shows, movies, applications and games on their respective televisions, the voice remote, on the other hand, gives them the freedom to select any content via voice command. The voice-controlled remote, with the device, can be navigated in two languages – English and Hindi – to search any Amazon video title.

The Android-based device that gives you access to over 3,000 apps, games, and services has an internal memory of 8GB, which cannot be expanded further. The device runs on a quad-core chip, with 1GB RAM and supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

“With intelligent features like advanced streaming and prediction (ASAP), the device analyses and learns what its user mostly watches and starts to pre-fetch similar content and reduces buffer time. This can speed up streaming by 50 per cent,” said Marc Whitten, vice-president, Amazon Fire TV.

The stick also constantly monitors your data and helps you manage your data plan more efficiently, he further added.

To lure prospective Amazon Fire TV Stick buyers, the company is also providing 100 GB free data over 3 months for Airtel Broadband and 4G Home WiFi devices, 240 GB free data over 3 months for YOU Broadband users, free EROS NOW premium membership for 3 months and ad-free streaming on gaana.com for 6 months.

Amazon Prime subscribers already get complimentary access to Amazon Prime Video. AmazonPrime membership can be purchased for just Rs 499 per annum.

The stick that carries Voot, NDTV, Hotstar, Sony Liv, etc on it, comes with a power adaptor for the stick, two AAA batteries, an HDMI extender cable and -- as mentioned above -- a voice remote.

Amazon launched its Amazon Prime Video vertical on December 14, 2016. “Since then we have made significant strides and have already seen billions of data being streamed by our consumers,” said Amit Agarwal, senior vice-president and country manager, Amazon India.

The company had earlier reported that it has set aside investment of Rs 2000 crore for Amazon Prime Video India.

Out of this Rs 500 crore would go for original content itself. Also, lately, the company has been seen partnering aggressively with Paramount studio for streaming rights of the recently released ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows’, ‘Star Trek Beyond’, and ‘10 Cloverfield Lane’as well as with filmmaker Kabir Khan for (securing) his upcoming title ‘The Forgotten Army.’
