Acquisition of land for Kazipet wagon project begins

The land acquisition process for the proposed wagon manufacturing unit at Kazipet in the Warangal district of Telangana has begun. “Mobilising funds for the Rs 150 crore project will not be a problem,” said P K Srivastava, general manager of South Central Railway (SCR).

According to him, the Telangana government is willing to provide land for the project, which will be spread over 125 acre.

The demand for implementing the project, pending for some years, got momentum after bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh because of its big employment potential.

Remarking that there are some encroachments in certain parts of the land identified for the project, Srivastava said the SCR had held talks with chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao and district collector in this regard.

Though Rs 5 crore has been allotted to the project, a timeline for its completion could not be set, he said.

Meanwhile, the zone has seen a 12 per cent increase in freight handling compared with 5-6 per cent growth seen at the national level. The SCR, so far, has handled 107.5 million tonne freight, which is expected to touch 120 million tonne this year. From freight and passenger fares, the SCR has earned about Rs 12,000 crore revenue, and has set a target of Rs 13,500 crore revenue for this fiscal.

On the rail connectivity to the Hyderabad International Airport, he said because of alignment reasons, the train would have to halt about 1.5 km from the airport, from where the passengers could be shifted by buses.
