...So shall you reap

Agriculture and its allied sectors are backbone of the global economy. These sectors play a crucial role of providing food stocks to nurture and energise the world. With growing population, agriculture sector needs to keep pace with the growing food demand. This can be done either by increasing acreage or increasing productivity of existing farmlands.

A monk in the world

Nobody is above the law of our country. Let the truth prevail and the guilty be punished.” said HH Jagadguru Shankaracharaya Shri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal. As an obituary, it is enough to say that nine years of doubt, while he waited for a court decree, in his favour is a very long time.

Specialisation is the key to globalisation

From starting a football club to owning an event marketing company called Sphinx Adonis Events across the country and then going global has been indeed an eventful journey for two brothers, who are targeting a turnover of Rs 25 crore next fiscal. This financial year they are targeting Rs 15 crore. While owning a football club at a young age was a big dream come true, taking that football club to a successful global event management company was beyond imagination, as it were.

The phrase, “no rest for the wicked” seems to describe the situation the Indian cricket team finds itself in. Having just completed a grueLling series in South Africa, the Indian side will leave shortly for Sri Lanka to play in the Nidahas Trophy. The tournament is being played to celebrate 70 years of Sri Lanka’s Independence. This tri-series is between the 3 Asian cricket playing tigers, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The matches will be played as a 20-20 format.

The political scene in India seems to be now totally attuned to the big electoral battle of 2019 with the opposition focusing on whatever it can find to criticise the Modi government — from the farmer’s suicides to the handling of Kashmir. Incidentally, the tragedy of farmers being compelled to take their lives on account of crop failure had touched its peak under the UPA regime.

Your future is in your hands

Independence in decision making is directly related to financial independence which can only be achieved by systematic financial planning.  Financial freedom and ownership of one’s resources is priceless and goes far beyond the monetary value it presents. Managing  money is a prerequisite for financial comfort. Irrespective of the economic strata, every woman should have means to support herself. Each woman has to learn and make an effort to go beyond routine work and embark on the journey of updating herself on the options available for securing future of her and her family.

Bangalore: oasis to chaos

Early last century and even after Independence the Garden City was the cynosure of all who came. Even up to late 1970s. I still remember vividly taking the Singapore planners around and see the way they admired and hoped to make their then crowded city into a Bangalore.

A Critical Weakness

The power sector now looks good. There is a surplus. Village electrification is getting completed. All households could get electrified within two years. Renewable sources of electricity are becoming cheaper and competitive. Last year renewable energy capacity that was added exceeded that of conventional thermal power.

The fiasco called JNU

It would seem to the lay public, that a handful of students and teachers, are standing up against the RSS run administration. It is the constantly illegal amendment of the statutes of JNU, by the current vice chancellor, professor Jagadesh Kumar, which is causing daily anxiety and consternation. The protests against his Machiavellian policies have been going on for two years now. The reason is simple: JNU was a laboratory for learning, and students and teachers have a long history of treating one another as citizens of a free country.

Every drop counts

The Supreme Court has delivered its verdict on the sharing of Cauvery water by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu’s share has been reduced and this has caused great disappointment. While Tamil Nadu and Karnataka continue their conversation on sharing of Cauvery water, it would be useful to take advantage of the important recommendation made by the Supreme Court for establishing a Cauvery management board speedily. This board should include eminent water technologists and agriculture specialists.
