When wrong is right

Whoever thought interior decorating is all about following a systematic and coordinated methodology to decorate spaces needs to go through the concept again. Designers have usually kept busy with making ‘wrong-looking’ interiors right, but those who do more wrong with it and successfully make it look absolutely right are slowly getting more recognition and acceptance in the industry, interior decorators feel. So, next time you feel like re-doing your kitchen, you can let the child in you make all the decisions and paint cabinet doorknobs in red, blue, green and other different colours. Basically make sure that everything looks ‘really really wrong’.
So wrong it seems right is a new trend with furniture designers, too. “In-spite of being weird, such designs and pieces are one of its kind. Consumers prefer such designs as they provide them with the feel of opulence and exclusivity. Some consumers find an instant connect with these out of the box designs,” Anurag Kanoria, director and chief designer of The Great Eastern Home, says. But when does this 'really really wrong' decor become right. According to designers, ‘so wrong it's right’ is a tricky one to get right. They say if what you are doing feels exciting, naughty or a bit edgy, then chances are you are doing something right.
“The primary reason that has brought about this change in the décor sector is the need to stand different from the rest.
These weird designs make your décor look exceptional and elite that adds uniqueness to your place. There has been a lot of emerging creativity that has been bought into the field of décor furnishings due to these unique designs. Designers move a step above, in terms of creativity and quality, with every design, to create the most unique and exclusive product for their customers,” Kanoria adds.
But Vivek Sachdeva, who has done interiors for Cafe Morrison in South Extension, New Delhi, has a different viewpoint. According to him, if asymmetry and un-coordination bothers your soul and gets on your nerves then it's probably not for you. “An entire house can not be designed weird or loud because you have to see that everyday. It should be practical and eye soothing, paints should be mix of light and warm colours and furniture should be comfortable and aesthetically good as per the décor,” he says, and adds, “But if it is for some particular portion or a few furniture in a home, something wacky can be definitely worked out.”
If you are going to a pub or restaurant, the place should look different and out-of-place but with a touch of warmth. “Here weird designing and wacky furniture make that cut,” Sachdeva says.
