past, the job market is looking not very encouraging and about three-fourth of the small and medium enterprises have no hiring plans, says a PHDCCI survey.

The economy and industry have started showing some signs of improvement in recent months after the global meltdown but the recovery may not create too many opportunities for job seekers in the near future.

"The job market is not too encouraging and we are moving towards a scenario of jobless growth," the survey said.

About 70 per cent of the 186 respondents, including from auto components, textiles and food processing sectors, said currently they do not have any hiring plans as the economy is yet to resume growth rates of the past.

India's economic growth was hampered due to the global financial crisis as the country could manage an expansion of only 6.7 per cent in 2008-09 against about nine per cent in the previous years.

Prime Minister Manamohan Singh had recently expressed hope of achieving over 7 per cent growth in the next fiscal and of 6.5 per cent in 2009-10.

The survey, however, said, about 30 per cent of the respondents have started hiring.

The survey said the job situation in the country would improve with recovery picking up in the developed countries.
