over the next 12 months. The company is all set to open a 150-seat development centre in Melbourne in December.

Victorian premier John Brumby who visited Wipro’s campus on Wednesday said, “Wipro’s Melbourne operations will play an integral role in its expansion in Australia.” He also said the company had also been in talks with a number of Victorian universities about internships, skills development and joint research projects.

Wipro chose to set up its Australia Development Centre in Melbourne to provide integrated business, technology and process solutions to local clients. The company estimates this centre will create 100 ICT jobs in Victoria over the next 12 months.

Wipro chairman Azim Premji said in a statement that the Victorian operations would strengthen the company’s Australia delivery capabilities and would boost its presence in the country. “Victoria holds almost 50 per cent of our current business in Australia with some of our large clients being based here,” he said.

Wipro has more than 800 employees working for Australian clients. Wipro had recently launched the Australian scholarship programme, as a part of its graduate recruitment programme in collaboration with Australian Computer Society (ACS) Foundation.

Wipro is also planning to hire more locals in Australia. It intends to increase the number of local employees to 250 by the end of the present financial year from around 100 at present.

The IT services market in Australia and New Zealand is about $14 billion and growing. This has prompted all Indian IT outsourcing providers to increase their focus on this market. Infosys has a subsidiary in Australia. With its acquisition of Expert Information Services, Infosys employs close to 400 people there.
