10 lakh to enrol for UID every day from October

“We have issued UID to close to one crore people and have set a goal of reaching 600 million people in five years. As we scale up the system by adding more technology at the back-end and more enrollment stations at the front-end, we are confident of getting one million enrolments a day by October,” said Nandan Nilekani, chairman of Unique Identity and Development Authority of India (UIDAI).

There are few million people who have enrolled and yet to get Aadhaar numbers, he said.

“We hope that the whole enrolment infrastructure will stabilise in the next few months. Enrolment infrastructure gives us scale and speed to reach millions of people,” Nilekani said.

He further said applications developed on the Aadhaar platform will be the long-term strategic ecosystem. Our job is to smoothen the path for developing applications for Aadhaar, while it is up to others to come out with ideas and figure out where it can be used. Any authorised partner can embed the identity verification that UIDAI provides into their applications.

“UID project is not about giving an ID card or number, it is about creating national ID online identity management platform,” he said.

According to him, Aadhaar will also be Know Your Customer (KYC) for wide variety of products and services.

RBI and ministry of finance have notified to use Aadhaar as KYC for opening bank account, department of telecommunications has notified Aadhaar as the KYC for getting SIM cards or phone lines, oil companies have notified Aadhaar KYC for LPG cylinders.

Sikkim and Tripura have notified that Aadhaar will be used as basic proof of identity for all government services.
