General insurers premium collection grows by 15%

The industry had collected Rs 2,598.52 crore premium in January 2009, sectoral regulator IRDA said in its monthly data.

The data further revealed that last month private sector general insurers underwrote premium of Rs 1,325.78 crore, up 20.47 per cent, against Rs 1,100.48 crore in the same period a year earlier.

Public sector general insurers that consists of four players, garnered a premium of Rs 1,672.07 crore in January, compared to Rs 1,498.04 crore in the same month in 2009.

While United India Insurance's premium in the said month stood at Rs 424.41 crore, up 21.15 per cent from Rs 350.31 crore in January 2009, premium collection of National Insurance Company rose 12.73 per cent at Rs 406.48 crore.

Oriental Insurance and New India Insurance's January premiums were at Rs 367.95 crore and Rs 473.23 crore, respectively.

Among private player Bajaj Allianz's premium in January was at Rs 231.85 crore, against Rs 217.09 crore in the same month in 2009, while ICICI Lombard General Insurance collected Rs 330.48 crore, against Rs 317.40 crore in the corresponding month last year.

Reliance General Insurance collected a premium of Rs 145.83 crore in January 2010 from Rs 140.70 crore in January 2009.
