Terming the set revenue target of Rs 5.32 lakh crore as "non-negotiable", CBDT Chairman

Laxman Das has written to top Income Tax officials in the country asking them to take up the "challenge" of filling the deficit.

With the direct tax collection growing at a slower pace of 9 per cent this financial year so far, the government is likely to miss the revenue mop up target for the 2011-12.

According to the latest finance ministry data, the net direct tax mop-up during the April-January period rose 9.28 per cent to Rs 3.46 lakh crore.

In a bid to encourage officials to collect as much revenue as possible, the CBDT chief also promised that the best performers will be awarded with good appraisals and choice transfers.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) boss has also asked all the Chief Commissioners to furnish the latest data of revenue collection in their respective regions compulsorily by February 15.

"I have taken over as Chairman at a time when revenue collections seem to be far away from the budget target, with less than two months at hand. At this critical juncture, our task as revenue administrators becomes that much more challenging.

"As senior officers, we have to play a critical role in making all possible efforts to improve the situation. We have to ensure every CC/DG achieves the budget target," Das, who took over the reins of the apex body of the I-T on February 1, told his Chief Commissioners and Commissioners.
