CBDT unit to look into party funds

A SPECIAL investigation unit has been set up by Central Board of Direct Taxes

to look into funding of 200-odd political parties, illegal mining, terror funding and various tax evading activities.

The unit will be headed by a commissioner in CBDT and will have five directors and as many under secretaries, and will deal with sensitive issues including criminal investigation and anti-tax evasion operations by the tax department, said a finance ministry official.

The special investigation unit will also look into tax evasion activities in a bid to check generation of black of money in the country. It will also monitor sensitive taxpayer information database of I-T department and scrutinise classified data received from financial intelligence unit,stocks and commodities regulators.
