The frills & thrills of windows
Dec 28 2011
Window curtains have been used to accessorise homes since forever. But there is always room for improvement
First things first, the correct position and placement of window in a room enables you to make maximum use of day light, which leads to a brighter room and a whole lot of positive energy.
But beautifully decorated windows can make a room look attractive as well as colourful. Curtains play a major role in decorating windows. There are plenty of accessories, which can be used along with curtains such as tiebacks, tassels, trimmings, rods, rings, brackets, and finials.
These provide that creative touch to the windows and bring a natural elegance to your home. Window shades are experiencing a material revolution. No longer do you have to stick to your grandmother's simple floral fabric and be done with it. You can add texture, now. Texture makes the window stand out and “pop” open.
There are three main things to consider when it comes to window decoration. First comes the size of the rooms. Smaller rooms call for simpler window treatments, such as sheers, basic top treatments, simple curtain panels or tier curtains. Larger rooms are suitable for more elaborate designs, such as heavier draperies and multiple layers, for maximum visual impact.
The second factor is the room type. A formal living room or dining room requires more decorative, layered drapery whereas bedroom requires dark colours for privacy.
Third is the function of a window. Lightweight and sheer window coverings are more decorative in function; and belong in rooms where privacy is not an issue. The main purpose is to allow natural light to enter a room. When privacy, room darkening or energy efficient functions are desired, however, moveable, heavier drapery panels should be used.
There are many patterns and fabric available today that can easily be coordinated, mixed and matched with borders, tassels, wallpapers, even with bedding linen. Cotton, silk and polyester curtains are most widely used. Whereas using cotton curtains would be an appropriate option in summers, fabrics like tissue, wool, nylon, lace and velvet add sophistication to the room. Add to this, various techniques, embellishments and weave patterns, the traditional zardozi, embroidery and applique or the modern printing and painting — your window will truly be a show stopper.
Just remember: You should always try to match the overall theme so your windows are in harmony with the rest of the room décor. zz
