The inFamous way to get your share of thrills

The inFamous way to get your share of thrills
What do you want to be—a guardian, a champion or a hero? Nope! How about being a thug, an outlaw or inFamous. Sounds interesting, especially when you have powers to grill, thrill or kill anybody.

Inspired by Batman Begins and the more recently released Dark Knight, the next generation super hero, Cole MacGrath has hit the mysterious world of Empire City with the power to obliterate anyone that comes his way through his electric thunder bolts.

No, it’s not a trailer of new Hollywood buzz or an action comic. Based on Playstation 3 platform, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has recently come up with its new action-adventure single player, open-ended and free-roaming game called inFamous.

India is one of the potential markets for gaming consoles. And to build craze among the Indian youth, game developers are now looking at new strategies and rolling out games to capture the newly-opened market.

“India is one of the key growth markets for the Playstation business. Console gaming, though nascent in India, is showing exponential growth in the market. Sony Playstation has seen 300% year-on-year growth in the last fiscal and summer sales has been very impressive,” said Atindriya Bose, Country Manager, Playstation, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

Bose said the company’s commitment to Indian business is exemplified by the publishing of Playstation games with Indian content in collaboration with Indian developers. Betting on Indian market he said “The gaming eco-system of India is fast becoming vibrant and opening a huge potential for Sony Playstation”.

inFamous, which infuses the concept of ‘Karma,’ virtualises the theme of famous and infamous within the character of Cole, who begins exploring immense electro-kinetic powers after surviving a fatal explosion. The common delivery man turned into a super hero, who now seeks revenge from those who asked him to deliver the explosive package. Will he go on a gratuitous rampage, choose to protect the innocent or do a mix of both?

Each action in the game would depend on the path the gamer will select. A vibrant story lineup is unveiled to the gamers when they progresses through the game, offering them a combination of graphic novel scenes and comic book animation. . With over 100 missions straddling three massive islands, a gamer’s conscience will be put to the test as he or she will have to decide whether to save or destroy Empire City.

According to Brian Fleming, the producer and Co-founder of Sucker Punch Productions, the developer of the game, inFamous is inspired by super hero comics and movies, providing a bigger scope, more content and more details then the earlier games.

One major features, he said, was Cole’s climbing and exploration abilities. “It’s one part scaling buildings athletically and gracefully, and one part vertical duck and cover combat. It’s empowering, fluid and works everywhere you think it should,” said Fleming.

All the actions in the game are aimed at being believable. The architecture of Empire City and its skyscrapers are designed after looking at lots of international cities, such as New York, Tokyo and Montreal. Apart from the lead story, there are several tasks which the super hero can perform as there will be a constant rush of crimes in the eco-system.

Besides Cole, other characters in the story included “Zeke”, the conspiracy theorist, survivalist and blood brother of Cole. There is a girl called Trish, who is Cole’s on-again/off-again girlfriend. The game is out in India with a price tag of Rs 2,499. Let’s not waste time.
