Follow an alkaline diet for a healthy way of life
Hollywood stars Gwy­neth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston and Kirsten Dunst have a common way of life, which they say is responsible for making them feel young and energetic, and look good as well.

And when celebrity Kim Tinkham was first diagnosed with breast cancer, she chose not to undergo chemotherapy or surgery to remove the cancer. Instead, she decided to follow the advice of a doctor who told her to follow a certain diet which would induce self healing. She even spoke to Oprah about this diet on her show. People around her asked Kim why she did not choose the conventional methods of cancer treatment, che­motherapy and surgery. Kim insisted that she believed that the body, if given a chance, could heal itself.

All four celebrities advocate an alkaline diet. The alkaline diet classifies foods as acidic, alkaline or neutral, depending on the kind of residue or ‘ash’ they leave behind when consumed.

Alkaline foods leave behind a residue of calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, and copper. Our blood is slightly alkaline, with a normal pH level of between 7.35 and 7.45. The premise for the alkaline diet is that our diet should reflect this pH level and be slightly alkaline. If we have an excessively acidic body, problems like illness, tumours, cancers, fatigue, premature aging and gum troubles get a chance to develop.

Almost all foods that we eat, after being metabolised, release either an acid or an alkaline base into blood. Grains, fish, meat, poultry, shellfish, cheese, milk, and salt all produce an acidic residue. Thus, a diet rich in carbohydrates and non-vegetarian foods produces more acid than a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Proponents of the alkaline diet believe that a diet high in acid-producing foods disrupts the pH balance and promotes the loss of essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium, as the body tries to restore equilibrium. This imbalance is thought to make people prone to illnesses.

Dr Robert Young, author of pH Miracle, advocates a diet which avoids sugar, red meat, shellfish, eggs, dairy products, processed and refined foods, stored grains, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, coffee, chocolate, and sodas, because these foods interfere with the body’s ability to eliminate excess acidity. Studies show that cancer cells seem to grow faster in an acidic environment. As we age, our bodies become more acidic. So increasing ones intake of fruits and vegetables creates a more alkaline situation that can then counter some of this acidity.

Hollywood’s famous nutritionist, Lindsey Duncan, advocates an alkaline diet. According to him, this diet is good for weight loss, improved immunity, and even disease prevention.

In the west, there are tra­ined live blood analysis practitioners who analyse people’s blood reports and advise them what steps to take in order to balance their alkalinity and manage the nutrient deficiencies in their bodies even before they actually fall sick. Here is an easy recipe to improve the alkalinity of your body.

Zucchini Delight

Ingredients: Green zucchini 1 medium, yellow zucchini 1 medium, garlic 3 pods (grated), 1 tsp rice bran oil, salt and pepper to taste, apple cider vinegar 2 tsp, lemon juice 1 tsp, red chilli pepper 1 tsp

Method: Wash and chop the zucchini into bite sized pieces. Mix the garlic, seasonings (reserve the lemon juice) and the vinegar in a bowl. Once well mixed, marinate the chopped zucchini pieces for one hour. Take a ceramic pan, heat it and add the oil. Add the marinated zucchini, toss well and cook it or about 5 minutes till they soften. Serve with a squeeze of lime juice.
