Endhiran to hit screens with 3,000 prints
The much-awaited Tamil movie, Endhiran, which is also being simultaneously released in Hindi and Telugu as Robot, is now all set to hit screens across the globe on September 24. The costliest movie ever made in an Indian language, the film is releasing with a big bang with 3,000 prints in all three languages, a new record for an Indian film.

“All the area rights, pertaining to the film’s theatrical release in all the three versions – Tamil, Hindi and Telugu – have been sold. The film will be released big with 3,000 prints, both in film and digital form,” Kalanithi Maran, chairman and managing director, Sun TV Network told Financial Chronicle.

Endhiran features Rajnikant and Aishwarya Rai in the lead, with Danny Denzogpa in a prominent character. While Shankar has directed the movie, the music has been scored by Oscar winner, A R Rahman. However, he declined to reveal the prices at which these rights were sold and also the actual budget of the film. “All areas have been sold on a minimum guarantee basis,” Maran said. According to a person, privy to the development, the budget of Endhiran would be around Rs 150 crore, even though industry sources place it much above at Rs 180 crore.

“From the sale of audio rights, as well as all area rights for theatres across all territories, Sun Pictures would have raked in over Rs 150 crore, including a major chunk from Tamil Nadu. While they have already made a cool profit, the satellite rights, vested with them, will be an added bonus,” he pointed out, on condition of anonymity. Sun Pictures, the film production arm of Sun TV Network, has produced Endhiran.

Originally launched by the London-based Ayngaran International, an arm of Eros International, Sun Pictures took over the film when recession hit the global markets.

Interestingly, the overseas theatrical rights for the film has been bought by Ayngaran International. The theatrical rights for the Hindi version, Robot has been acquired by Manohar Prasad’s Gemini Film Circuit. Sun Pictures had earlier sold the Telugu rights to Thota Kanna Rao of Sri Krishna Traders for a record Rs 27 crore and the Karnataka territory, where the film’s Tamil version will be released, was acquired by Thimme Gowda and Muniraju of Sri Veera Anjaneya Films for Rs 8.5 crore.

The audio rights for Tamil and Telugu were picked up by Think Music, while the Hindi audio rights went to Venus. Sun Pictures launched the film’s music on a grand scale in Malaysia and Mumbai.
