Suicides must not be related to professional stress
Jul 20 2010
Every morning most of us go through the various tabloids not just for news on political issues and sports but also to keep ourselves abreast with the goings-on in the world of fashion!
With the Couture Week, which began yesterday, there is a lot of buzz around our world. The tabloids are full of news about the various designers showcasing the collections they are showing, the fitness regime models are taking up to be in shape, who is walking for whom and so much more. Inevitably so, I have been thinking about the various mishaps connected with the fashion industry of late. We have spent a fair share of time and speculation towards the supposed suicides of the likes of Alexander McQueen, Isebella Blow, Viveka Babaji, Tom Nikon, Noemie Lenoir, Daul Kim and the list goes on. We wonder what it is that makes such talented people take their lives despite being so successful and wonder what is wrong with the industry if it brings people to such a point. But have you realised that it is not the industry that has anything to do with such mishaps.
Great legends like Michael Jackson, Guru Dutt and Kurt Cobain, among others, have met a similar fate.
I feel there have been various reasons behind the unfortunate end of each of these peoples’ lives. It has more to do with dissatisfaction in their personal lives than professional lives that has prompted them to end their lustrous sojourn. Some receded into a shell enveloping themselves in the fumes of depressants like various kinds of drugs, an overdose of which had eventually brought them to the end of the trail.
At a social do, I happened be part of a discussion revolving around the same; it was rather disturbing to know how people generalise their opinions on immature reading and understanding of the subject. Half-baked information teamed with malicious hearsay can be a lethal combination. It is almost as if one needs some gossip to get them through the next couple of days! Juicer the better!!
Having seen the industry from closer quarters, it is easy for me to say that there is indeed a lot of pressure to perform but that does not push us to take such drastic steps. And, which profession is easy and laid-back anyways? The only reason one gets to hear and read more about the on-goings in the fashion industry is simply because there is a lot of glamour attached to the lives of those part of it.
I think it has more to do with today’s generation not being able to cope with pressures than anything else. There will always be disappointments in life and have to be faced without tragedy.
It is safe to assume and believe that the industry is not unsafe to be part of. Work and performance pressures are mounting in every field and one must not have a bias against a profession simply because of its glamorous nature.
