Remembering the magic of a master designer
Feb 16 2010
I have always been in awe of Alexander McQueen. His collections were bold and spoke a language of their own. They were audacious, cerebral, thought provoking and completely mesmerising. Always glamorous and uniquely his very own! He seldom failed to surprise the audience. When he first came on the scene in the early 90s everyone sat up and took notice. He truly was someone who brought about a revolution in the world of fashion. He always had a very eclectic approach towards fashion, which constantly questioned every aspect of a questing mind.
One marvelled at his way of never letting a message be more important than its medium. His clothes were the perfect representation of the fine understanding he had of balancing out the drama with the essence of a collection.
His clothes were impeccably tailored, and you could always see the classic roots meeting high-flying artistry. Each season, I would be most eager to know of his vision of what the future of fashion held in store for us, and the conversations and controversies it would trigger. McQueen’s brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection with the extraordinary skills of a master.
He was one who created astounding fashion that mixed design, technology and performance. He was a modern-day genie who did his trick each time- pulled out brilliantly well-spun collections each season.
He has dressed some of the biggest names — Sarah Jessica Parker, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and many more.
His line of accolades don’t stop just yet, McQueen received recognition from Queen Elizabeth II in 2003, when she made him a Commander of the British Empire for his fashion leadership.
Fashion came to have a whole new connotation after McQueen came to the forefront. Inspiration to designers over the world, he added a whole new dimension to the understanding of the word fashion. He brought a unique sense of daring and aesthetic fearlessness to the global stage of fashion. In such a short career, Alexander McQueen's influence was astonishing—from street style, to music culture and the world's museums, his passing marks an insurmountable loss.
His collections have always been intelligent and thought provoking. He took risks in his works, and had a reputation for stirring controversy with their shock value. He knew how to spin an idea around into something larger than life.
One of his collections included a show built around the concept of recycling, with models donning trash headgears.
Ignorant of the happenings on the other side of the globe, I sat in my little studio spinning my own web of designs around scrap. How ironic could it be!
As the fashion fraternity tries to cope with the last shock he left us to, I dedicate my collection to the master.
