A cheese with live maggots? Why not? Casu marzu is a Sardinian cheese that contains live maggots. In fact, a typical Casu marzu will contain thousands of them. These maggots are almost transparent and grow to about 8mm long. The story doesn't end here, the maggots can jump up to five inches out of cheese while you’re eating it and thus, because of their athletic  capabilities, you need to be extra careful otherwise they’ll be in your eyes and your nose! Casu marzu has been declared illegal and not in compliance with EU hygienic standards. However, for Sardinians, the thousand years old traditional food Casu marzu holds a very special place
