Thanuja B M, he says Wipro is involved in the Unique Identity project and is also engaged with service providers during the run-up to the Commonwealth Games .
Wipro has been bullish on the Indian IT market. How is it positioned now?
We have always been focused on India. The environment here is getting better with government projects in various key sectors.
The domestic market is valued at around $30 billion, with the services market estimated at $12-13 billion. With India betting big on infrastructure projects involving airports, roads, healthcare and power, the pie is bound to grow further. We are expecting the market to grow by 15-20 per cent from here.
How has the compnaybeen expanding its domestic IT market?
Wipro’s revenues crossed $1 billion from India and West Asia in the last financial year. About 18 per cent of our revenues come from these two regions. Of this, over 80 per cent revenue comes from India.
Our India business has been growing 1.5-3 times the market growth rate and we hopezz to continue that trend.
What is the demand situation in India?
There are many projects, especially those related to government, running into thousands of crores of rupees. The government sector is a long-term segment and a company has to have a three-to-five-year focus. Wipro has a huge funnel for projects for different works such as application development and setting up data centres.
Which are some of the key projects that you are involved with? Can you name a few?
Wipro Technologies is involved in the Unique Identification project (headed by Nandan Nilekani). I am not at liberty to say more, but we’re engaged in initial discussions and concepts. Also, we are partnering with service providers such as GMR for the Commonwealth Games. Some other projects cannot be revealed at this stage.
