Come October 15 and residents of Mysore and Tumkur districts in Karnataka will be the first to get the Aadhar numbers.

Aadhar is the unique identification number (UID) that is proposed to be given out to 60 crore Indians in next four and a half years.

Speaking at the Nasscom infrastructure management services summit 2010, UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani on Thursday said Aadhar will be rolled out in next four weeks but didn’t specify a date or location.

However, Karnataka’s e-governance secretary MN Vidhyashankar told Financial Chronicle that the programme will go live from October 15. “We hope to complete Mysore and Tumkur districts by December-end and will launch the UID project in the remaining 28 districts in the state on January 1, 2011. We are contemplating covering the entire state by December 31, 2011,’’ he added.

Karnataka is expected to be followed soon by states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharasthra and Gujarat in enrolments.

Infosys co-founder Nilekani, who was conferred the 12th Sir M Visvesvaraya Memorial Award on Founder’s Day organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) to mark the birth anniversary of Sir M Visvesvaraya, said UID will be a national inter-operable mobile identity, based on biometrics, which people can use anywhere in the country.

He said UIDAI has identified 220 enrolment agencies in the country for the roll out of the project. The authority is planning to set up micro ATMs in the country, especially villages where no ATM facility is available. The micro ATMs set up in the local shops will have a biometric reader which can act as an authentication device.
