The company had sold 1.664 million tonnes of steel in the corresponding quarter last fiscal, it said in a statement.

Sale of flat products increased by 3 per cent during the quarter over the year-ago period.

The retail sale of long products recorded its highest ever quarterly sales at 2.68 lakh tonnes.

However, total sales in the second quarter of this fiscal were higher than the previous quarter sales of 1.593 million tonnes.

Production of crude steel during the reporting quarter stood at 1.742 million tonnes compared to 1.726 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year.

Saleable steel production, however, rose to 1.71 million tonnes during the second quarter of this fiscal against 1.61 million tonnes in the same quarter last year.

Tata Steel said its total sales in the first half of the fiscal increased to 3.241 million tonnes from 3.064 million tonnes a year ago.

Similarly, crude steel production went up to 3.536 million tonnes from 3.353 million tonnes and saleable steel production went up to 3.46 million tonnes from 3.201 million tonnes.
