the 33-year-old son of chairman Azim Premji, has been appointed as the new chief strategy officer.

About the appointment, Saurabh Govil, senior vice-president and head of human resources of the company, only said, “He will assume responsibilities as the chief strategy officer of the IT business. In this role he will report to the joint chief executive officers of the IT business.”

The position entails looking after merger & acquisitions and growth strategy of the company. Wipro is aggressively continuing its “string of small pearl and big pearl” strategy in terms of acquisitions.

According to Govil, Rishad brings with him diversified experience in consulting, finance, treasury and operations.

Seen as the obvious choice to lead the company in future, the elder son of Premji joined Wipro in 2007 as a business manager, reporting to Soumitro Ghosh, senior vice-president of the banking and financial services division.

He is credited with helping the company drive two critical acquisitions. In 2009, he became the general manager of treasury & investor relations. Till now he has reported to Rajendra Kumar Shreemal, head of investor relations.

Meanwhile, Lakshminarayana KR, popularly called Lan, the present chief strategy officer, will take up the position of chief endowment officer of the trust set up to fund the philanthropic activities of Azim Premji.

“In his new role, Lan will be responsible for managing investments from the corpus of the trust for Azim Premji Foundation & affiliated entities,” Govil said.

Rishad has an MBA degree from Harvard Business School and has worked with GE Capital and the consulting firm Bain & Co before joining Wipro in July 2007.
