Taiwan-based touchscreen mobile manufacturer High Tech Computer (HTC) plans to ship 10,00,000 touchscreen devices for Indian market in 2010.

HTC has been branded as the manufacturer of touchscreen handsets.

The company, which is bullish about the growing mobile market, is hoping to sell 2,50,000 handsets during this year. The mobile vendor has set a target of 600,000 units for 2009.

Ajay Sharma, country head, HTC India, told Financial Chronicle that major cities across the country contribute 70 per cent sale of HTC devices. “Our major customers are in the top nine cities. We have our presence in 29 cities and towns,” he said.

Sharma said that HTC’s Touch Diamond is the first handset with three-dimensional (3D) features that has a unique position in the Indian market.

“HTC has been branded as Touch always, and that is our identity. Today, the Indian mobile market has only seen the tip of the iceberg. There is a huge space to grow. We are strongly focusing on the Indian market and exploring opportunities to grow,” Sharma said.

HTC sees third-generation (3G) mobile services as a bigger opportunity. He said 3G technology devices are the core strength of the company.

Sharma said HTC would be launching a couple of new models to meet the needs of 3G subscribers. At present, HTC has 13 handset models for the Indian market, which includes 11 global system for mobile communications (GSM) phones and two code division multiple access (CDMA) phones, priced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 30,000.

The 3G devices would be launched at different price points, depending on the competition in the mobile arena, he added.

“We are witnessing a growth of more than double in terms of our handset shipments. In the fourth quarter of this year, we might be exiting around three handset models and would be launching around five new models to suite consumer tastes,” Sharma said.

HTC launched the HTC Touch in June 2007 with a fingertip control feature, enabling more intuitive navigation.

The HTC Touch is equipped with TouchFLO, which enables consumers just to just sweep their finger across the screen to get access to the most commonly used content, contacts and features in a simple finger flick.
