Furniture brand targets young home buyers

French furniture maker Gautier is looking to grab bulk deals from real estate developers in India, particularly in Hyderabad. The company is already in talks with a few big developers in Hyderabad, said Abhijeet Mitra, chief executive officer of Ebony Gautier.

“A lot of young people, whose EMI tenure will be long, are buying properties in Hyderabad. We would like to cater to this segment. We are in talks with the real estate developers for bulk sales,” he said.

Ebony Gautier, a joint venture between Indian lifestyle retailing player Ebony and the French furniture brand, launched its fifth showroom in India here on Monday. It would focus on retail sales as well. “Several people are renovating their houses with premium products. It is not uncommon in Hyderabad to find people spending upto Rs 1 crore for a dwelling unit. Furniture, for these people will be a key requirement,” he said.

At present, furniture imports attract a duty of 27.5 per cent. Gautier imports its products and has warehouses in Chennai and Delhi to deliver the orders. “Our own plant might be sensible when our revenues clock Rs 100 crore,” Mitra said without quantifying the current revenues in India. He said the segment is growing around 40 per cent and might take three years or so for achieving a threshold in volumes.
