Carlsberg is like Mercedes in cars

n What is Carlsberg’s strategy and how do you perceive the Indian market?

Carlsberg wants to become a significant player in the Indian beer market which is expected to grow 10 per cent this year and hence we are constantly evaluating various options to drive our ambition.

Carlsberg’s annual report said all Asian markets contributed to profit growth last year, except India. When do you expect to break even in terms of investments?

We are still in a start-up phase and like any start-up, we are in phase of investment with regard to brewery capacity expansion, brand building and setting up commercial capabilities. I cannot comment on profitability of operations.

Are you in talks with AB India to share any of its existing production facilities or distribution network in India?

e have had initial contact with AB InBev, during which we talked about possibilities in India. It was a loose meeting. We just had a chat over a beer.

What is the immediate impact of these talks to your Indian operations?

We are selling quite well and do not have excess capacity to share at the moment.

Are plans to build the Hyderabad brewery on track?

Yes, absolutely, plans for the Hyderabad brewery are on track and we are expecting to start the production later this year. We have already started the recruitment process.

Carlsberg is priced at a premium to other beers in its segment. Is there a possibility of a price reduction to compete better?

Carlsberg is like Mercedes Benz in cars. We have put the best of ingredients and the quality of the raw materials ensures a higher price for the beer. It is India’s only locally produced all malt beer.
