Wine intake to treble by 2015

Wine consumption in India is growing by 25-30 per cent per annum and is set to treble to 30 lakh cases by 2015 from less than 10 lakh in 2008.
According to a study by US wine-based tourism major Viviani, domestic wine makers in India will take the centre stage while the industry will see an exponential growth.
Total wine consumption in India was 5.5 lakh cases in 2004 which rose to nearly 10 lakh cases in 2008. This year, it is expected to cross 15 lakh cases and treble by 2015, the study pointed out.
“Two of the major wine consuming states Karnataka and Maharash-tra came out with legislations recently that favoured local wine industry,” Vivaini Destination Management Company chief executive officer Linda Viviani said.
These legislations would definitely encourage local players in the short run but limit the overall growth of industry, she said.
Viviani said the annual 25-30 per cent growth over next five years will be on account of wide range of social and economic reasons. Some of the reasons Viviani cited included India’s good climate for grape growing and increasing disposable income.
Besides, she said, “Super market and organised retails are emerging to support wine distribution infrastructure.”
