Mercedes-Benz, India’s biggest German luxury carmaker by sales on Wednesday expanded its sports utility vehicle (SUV) range by introducing two new cars the Mercedes-AMG G 63 ‘Edition 463’ and Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 to boost sales in Asia’s third largest car market.

Mercedes AMG G 63 ‘Edition 463’ carries a price band of Rs 2.17 crore, while Mercedes AMG GLS 63 cost Rs 1.58 crore at showroom in Pune.

Both the SUVs are launched under the Mercedes-Benz 'designo' personalisation platform where customers can opt to customise their vehicles.

The launch boosts the company’s presence in the performance SUV segment, taking SUV portfolio to eight products.

It also consolidates its leading position in the luxury performance segment along compatriot arch rival such as BMW, Audi, and Tata Motors-owned British iconic sports car maker Jaguar Land Rover.

The Pune-based automobile major’s position in luxury performance segment is spearheaded by the AMG sub-brand.

‘G’ is one of the most sought after letters in the automobile world, especially when it comes to performance SUVs. Globally, the ‘G Wagen’ has thrilled buyers for almost four decades, since 1979 to be precise.

“Even after 37 years of technological evolution, every G is still crafted by hand in Graz, Austria. Every intricate detail of this 3 ton plus SUV is meticulously tested and handcrafted to perfection by the immaculate AMG engineers,” Roland Folger, managing director and CEO at Mercedes-Benz India, said.

The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 also shows strength of character with its updated design featuring the AMG brand look and high-quality interior. The brand’s hallmark superior ‘Driving Performance’ and the generous space for passengers and luggage characterise the new Mercedes-AMG GLS 63.

“With today’s launch we further strengthen our AMG portfolio in India and are confident of leading the performance segment with fascinating product interventions,” Folger said.

The new Mercedes-AMG G 63 is equipped with a supercharged 5.5-litre V8 bi-turbo petrol engine and accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.4 seconds. It has an electronically-limited top speed of 210 km per hour.

Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 AMG is powered by 5.5-litre V8 b-turbo engine, which develops a peak output of 430 kW and maximum torque of 760 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 4.6 seconds.

The new SUVs are equipped with features such as off-road reduction gear and the electronic traction system enhancing their off-roading capabilities, the company said.

These are the 5th and 6th new launches within this year till date. Mercedes-Benz India plans to have a similar number of product introductions in India as last year, when it launched 13 new vehicles.

In the January-March quarter, the company had posted its best ever quarterly sales in India at 3,650 units, albeit just a marginal increase from 3,622 units in the year-ago period.

The company’s sales stood at 13,231 units in 2016, down 1.8 per cent from 2015.
