Has the Liberhan report really opened our yes? Has it given any deliverance? The report has indicted various leaders of the saffron brigade, such as LK Advani, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, MM Joshi, Kalyan Singh and various others.
Surprisingly, P V Narasimha Rao, the then prime minister, has been absolved with a minor chiding.
But has the report, after nearly two decades (17 years) and 48 extensions, really brought out any new information? Didn't we all know who the people were behind the demolition of the Babri Masjid? Justice Liberhan vented his anger on television news channels denying his involvement in the alleged `leak'. We don't need to know rocket science to figure out that the entire course of action was well-planned. Ask any architect, and he or she will tell you that demolishing that kind of structure needs meticulous planning. What now? The BJP and the Congress will keep debating the issue of `leak' and pandemonium in Parliament will keep stalling pending government business.
Meanwhile, inflation or no inflation, prices of essential goods will keep rising. Soon enough, it will be business as usual. When more than 200 witnesses in one year could not lead to justice for the 26/11 victims, what will a commission's report do after 17 odd years? At most, it will raise a storm that will die down as soon as it rose.
Indians, by nature, are very accommodative. It doesn't matter if people like Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan lay down their lives, it doesn't matter if shadows are cast on the Batla House encounter, it doesn't matter if a commission's report indicts some top leaders -- life will go on and such instances will keep recurring. The delayed report is another instance of government machinery taking its own sweet time to resolve thorny issues. It is high time we altered Indian Standard Time (IST) to Indian Stretchable Time.
